The EMA was set up on June 17th, 2006, Brussels, at the second Erasmus Mundus Student Seminar organised by DG Education and Culture of the European Commission. The EC clearly recognized a need for a network of students and alumni, a platform for ideas, and a meeting place for EM students and alumni out of which new initiatives could be born. They took the initiative to stimulate the creation of a student and alumni association; the association however should and is run entirely by the students and alumni themselves.
33 representatives, one from each EMMC that were admitted to the Erasmus Mundus Programme in 2004 and 2005, took an afternoon to discuss how to set up a student and alumni association. They decided to first distribute which activities should be undertaken by this new association. Each activity was undertaken by a team, and a team coordinator of each team would take a seat in the Launch Committee. The Launch Committee would develop the association so that it could be formally launched at it’s first General Assembly. Seven teams were formed, and coordinators appointed:
• Conference Team: Chunyu Liang
• IT Team: Taghi Paksima
• Jobs Team: Hanneke Luth
• Newsletter Team: Kathlyn Clark, replaced by Ross Hu Zhongliang in October 2006
• Magazine Team: Rikke Skovgaard Andersen
• Policy Team: Matthias Herkt, replaced by Roman Savka in October 2006
• Promotions Team: Sipho Heleni Rutsate, replaced by Ryan Bushek in October 2006
This meeting was followed up by a meeting of the Liaison Group, being all 33 representatives together, on 19-20 October 2006. Here, the teams started to work out all ideas and initiatives that could fall under the umbrella of the EMA. A couple more meetings followed, in and out of Brussels, with the Launch Committee alone or with active members. The ideas and initiatives led to first results: a proposal for a Statute was drafted, plans for conferences set up, news letters were published, a magazine prepared, career perspectives looked into and job openings found, the website and community was set up, and the EMA active members became the representatives of high quality European Education in a global setting at various events, promoting the brand of Erasmus Mundus wherever they went. The name and the logo were chosen by the members themselves.
Finally, on October 12th, 2007, the first General Assembly of the Erasmus Mundus Students and Alumni Association took place in Brussels. Not only was the first Steering Committee of the EMA elected by the representatives of EMMC’s, also a first Statute was adopted, creating a firm ground for the workings of the EMA.
