The SEA chapter unites EMA members from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

History

The idea of establishing EMA SEA Chapter dated back to 1st November 2008, when a group of EMA members gathered in Jakarta for the 3rd EMA networking event and to share their experience in the European Higher Education Fair (EHEF). IThe group recognized the needs to create strong bonding and increase mutual cooperation between EM student/alumni in the region in order to support eachother in areas like employment, providing feedback to Erasmus Mundus Courses, social involvement in the region and promotion of the programme, as well as cooperation with the local EU Delegations. 

Our goals

  • To promote Erasmus Mundus as a European programme of excellence in international education
  • To strengthen regional cooperation between members from different countries and increase mutual collaboration
  • To serve the interests of the members, notably by providing a forum for networking, communication and collaboration

Regular Activities

  • Participation in European Higher Education Fair (EHEF) in the region
  • Organization of Erasmus Mundus pre-departure briefing for newly selected students
  • Close cooperation with the EU Delegations in the region
  • Networking event within the region and within each member countries

Recent and Upcoming Activities

  • EMA-Cambodia Networking Event (Phnom Penh, 1st July 2011)
  • "Erasmus Mundus: The Stories Behind" - book launching (Jakarta, 21st July 2011). Written by 15 Erasmus Mundus Indonesian alumni from 2006 to 2009, this anthology book contains many breathtaking stories about alumni's invaluable life experiences, ranging from meeting with the former UN Secretary, Mr. Kofi Annan, to greeting the soccer super star, David Beckham. Alumni expect their stories to become inspiration for readers.

  • EMA SEA Regional Networking Event (Bangkok, 10-11th September 2011).
  • Erasmus Mundus Back to School 2011 (Bangkok, 11th September 2011). Coordinated by Thailand EMA members, this event is aiming to make the young generation aware of the existence of the Erasmus Mundus Association in Thailand and its future activities where they can take part and get the benefit.
  • Erasmus Mundus Society Care V (Jakarta, 24th September 2011). Indonesian members are the initiators of this activity: the EMA members will visit street children who have very minimal access to proper education, to share practical tips of the importance of education, hoping that it will inspire the children to develop their skills to have brighter future.
  • EMA Results Dissemination Workshop (Phnom Penh, 1st November 2011). Coordinated by Cambodian EMA members, this event will be located in University of Cambodia (UC) where the members will present and share ideas/ experiences with the UC students about Erasmus Mundus scholarship and EMA-Cambodia.

Chapter Board

President

Iqbal Akbar is an alumnus from the Erasmus Mundus Masters Program "European Master in Nuclear Fusion Science and Engineering Physics". He has been involved in EMA activities since the beginning of the Chapter development in late 2008, as the member of Team Pro-Chapter. At EMA General Assembly 2009 in Vilnius, he introduced the SEA Chapter to the EMA Steering Committee. Having studied in Madrid, Stuttgart, and Nancy, he is now leading the chapter to build a solid network  between the chapter members and EMA. Currently working as professional engineer in an international oil & gas company, he will be directing this Chapter to achieve positive goals for the members. Internal Communication and Development team coordinator will report directly to him.

Vice President

Chaidarun Iamphak is the Chapter's Vice President who is mainly responsible for the coordination of all Southeast Asia country representatives. Jum has contributed to the development the Southeast Asia Chapter by representing the Chapter at the Liason Group Meeting with European Commission in 2009. She is now working in the Bureau of International Cooperation Strategy of Royal Thai Ministry of Education. Her links to international and regional networks will definitely help the Chapter to facilitate the dialogue on employment, social, and economic development issues. She will be closely working with the General Affairs team coordinator to ensure effective and beneficial cooperation with European Commission delegations in Southeast Asia region.

General Affairs Team Coordinator

Raan Hann Tan is the Chapter's General Affairs team coordinator. He supports the  EM awardees in easing the process of their mobility to study in Europe. Her master degree in European Humanities allows her to understand the value of diversity which corresponds to the current face of the Chapter:) Her intention to help new EM awardees in her master program is realized theough active blogging. She is also working hand in hand with the Chapter's Vice President and Country Representatives to strengthen national networking groups.


Internal Communication Team Coordinator

Yansen Darmaputra graduated from the Erasmus Mundus Masters Program "European Masters Program in Computational Logic", and studied in Italy and Austria. After graduation, he became he Erasmus Mundus alumni coordinator on European Higher Education Fair 2008 in Jakarta, where alumni from various countries in the region came to share their experience, and establish the foundation to create the chapter. His blog at emundus.wordpress.com is one of the main source for Indonesian prospective students to discuss and ask questions about Erasmus Mundus. As Internal Communication team coordinator, he is responsible for the deployment of communication electronic platform and Chapter member database. He's closely working with EMA IT team in making more efficient work for EMA and the Chapter.

Promotion team coordinator

See Yuen Beh graduated from EM of Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion in 2008. She was chosen as the course representative at 2009 EMA General Assembly. She has been working with the Chapter as the representative in the internal and external promotion working group to develop new initiatives and strategic planning for the EM promotion in a more global prespective. As the Promotion team coordinator, she will be working mainly for the EM, EMA, and Chapter promotion on a regional basis. She is also responsible for regional networking and intra-chapter events.

Development Team Coordinator

Roger Chao believes that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a
single step. His belief lays the foundation for his contribution to
the Chapter as Development team coordinator. He graduated from the
European Masters in Lifelong Learning in Denmark where he had the chance to obtain skills that can be used for the creation of think-tank to identify regional fundamental issues. He is currently a PhD candidate at the City University of Hong Kong pursuing Asian and International Studies. Furthermore, he is also working to hold the mutual cooperation with the private sectors in Southeast Asia.
