EMA at CaribErasmus Conference

On the 20th of October 2011 the Latin American Chapter participated in the CaribErasmus Conference on academic cooperation and mobility, which took place in the Dominican Republic on the 19th and 20th of October.

The conference was organised by CaribErasmus, a project that aims to foster academic cooperation between Europe and the Caribbean by promoting the mobility opportunities offered to Dominican students and researchers by the Erasmus Mundus programme and discussing the main barriers to Europe-Dominican and Euro-Caribbean academic cooperation and mobility and advance on possible shared solutions. During the conference the first results of the CaribErasmus project, including a survey on the opinions of Caribbean students about European higher education and a website presenting scholarships to study in Europe.

A series of talks were given by partners of the CaribErasmus project, including MENON (Brussels), Caribbean Knowledge and Learning Network (Barbados), UNIBE (Dominican Republic), EURASHE (Brussels), Studyportals (Netherlands), Almalaurea (Italy). Roberta Gregoli, President of the Latin American Chapter of the Erasmus Mundus Student and Alumni Association (EMA-LA), presented the Chapter and the actions taken so far to tackle issues of promotion and degree recognition of Erasmus Mundus degrees outside Europe. Also present in the meeting were Juan Carlos Sis Perez, EMA Country Representative for Guatemala, and Akilah Stewart, representing Trinidad and Tobago’s Erasmus Mundus alumni. 

On the 21st of October, the EMA-LA delegates had a meeting with Harje Kjellberg, EMA Country Representative for the Dominican Republic, and Daniel Abreu, alumni of the Mundus MAPP in Public Policy. The objective of the meeting was to share the Chapter’s best practices, devise strategies to promote the Erasmus Mundus programme and offer support to alumni and prospective students locally. The meeting constituted an EMA-LA regional gathering, the first to take place in the Caribbean.
