One Issue - One Programme

JEMES – Joint European Master Programme in Environmental Studies features at the current One Issue - One Programme section.

The Joint European Master programme in Environmental Studies (JEMES), offered by four universities (Aalborg Universitet, Denmark; Universidade de Aveiro, Portugal; Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, Spain; Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg, Germany), provides an integrated, state-of-the-art technological and management education. Unlike other programmes, separated into two streams of Environmental Technology Engineering and Environmental Management Engineering respectively, JEMES interweaves technological and management education on a high academic level.

This programme helps students to acquire broad knowledge and excellent scientific background understanding in the field, along with important skills such as teamwork, management of complex environmental processes, analytical competency, and high intercultural awareness. Moreover, it provides students with the knowledge of complex of environmental processes; environmental management concepts, methods and tools in the field of cleaner production, industrial ecology, ecological economics and air quality management; innovation and management of sustainable development in European and international contexts.

Students have a possibility to try out both streams in the first year, so they can decide for themselves which stream they want to specialise in later on. The last semester is entirely devoted to the thesis research.

JEMES is remarkable for its interdisciplinary character, close link between practical and theoretical components, research-based thesis, and the “shift of perspective” which all students have to undergo during training. JEMES students benefit from the specific expertise of each partner university. Student-professor ratio is exceptionally good. After graduation, students obtain a joint M. Sc. degree in Environmental Studies. Graduates have an extensive overview of new developments and future trends in the area and will enjoy privileged access to prominent enterprises and institutions worldwide.

What students and alumni say about the programme:

“At my stay and study of one year I found the programme to be an excellent  programme with an academic offering of clearly world-class, which will prepare me effectively for my future career…”(Mulugeta Goa,2008-2010)

Duration of the study: Two years (120 ECTS)
