This years conference organized by the State Government of North Rhine-Westphalia took place on...

The German State Government of North Rhine-Westphalia in cooperation with the City of Bonn, the German Development Institute (DIE), the Wuppertal Institute Collaborating Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP) and the Association of German Non-Governmental Organizations (VENRO) organized the 3rd Development Policy Conference: “Global Lifestyles – New Pathways for Development Policy”.

Specifically focusing on sustainable consumption and production patterns, the conference became a platform for fierce debate for the 800 participants, who included representatives from multinational corporations, international organizations and national institutions, as well as politicians and civil society activists. The main questions discussed were: How can the growth trajectory and welfare of countries be protected given the effects of industrial production on climate and environment? What effects do lifestyles and consumption habits in the wealthy industrial and service-based nations have on countries of the Global South? How can consumers be made more sensitive to the relations between consumption behavior and development policy?

Some conference participants argued that current consumption-production relations between the Global North and South were acceptable and that only shift towards more efficient and environmental friendly production patterns was necessary. However, critics of the view pointed out the implications of global inequality and of the marginalization of producers in the South. They strongly advocated for a complete reconsideration of current international production and consumption relations.

A healthy way of fundraising: running for charity

EMA member Marta Morena prepares for the Silverstone Half Marathon in March. Support her cause!

Running for charity is a common way to do fundraising in the UK. People who decide to run for charity look for sponsors among their family, friends, clubs, workplace, etc. The money the runner collects, plus a percentage that is matched, goes to the charity.
I am studying the Erasmus Mundus Master in Human Rights Practice. I am spending my second semester in London, and, since I love running so much, I could not miss this opportunity to “run my talk”. I am going to participate in the Silverstone Half Marathon, which takes place at the Silverstone Circuit the 11th of March. I am running for
, “a global humanitarian organization committed to ending world hunger, works to save the lives of malnourished children while providing communities with access to safe water and sustainable solutions to hunger" .
I would like to ask all the members of the EMA community to support this cause and sponsor me. As little as 6 pounds can make a big difference in the most disadvantaged communities. We are a huge community and we can make a big difference with such a little effort. In a period of economic crisis, it is always the most disadvantaged who suffer the most.
You can support this cause by donating
.
I will keep you updated with my training in my
. Do leave a message from time to time, I need psychological support from everywhere in the world! :)
