The first-ever German Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO) took place on 10 July 2025, marking a significant milestone for the Erasmus Mundus community in Germany. Organized by Erasmus Mundus Students & Alumni Association (EMA AISBL), Country Representative Germany, Nico Wichmann, this pioneering online event brought together over 50 newly selected Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree (EMJMD) students, all eager to embark on their international academic journey.
Designed as a tailored and interactive welcome session, the PDO aimed to address the unique needs and questions of German EMJMD students preparing to study abroad. Topics covered included health insurance coverage overseas, maintaining eligibility for governmental funding, deregistering residence before departure, and financing options beyond the EMJMD scholarship. These practical insights provided participants with the clarity and confidence needed to navigate the administrative and logistical aspects of studying in multiple countries.
Beyond the formal guidance, the session fostered a sense of community and connection. Participants benefited from presentations, personal stories from EM alumni, and a lively Q&A session, where they could directly engage with experienced Erasmus Mundus graduates. The discussions also touched on networking strategies, adapting to cultural diversity, and making the most of the early months of their programs, ensuring that new students not only survive but truly thrive in their international environments.
The event also marked the official launch of the EMA Germany initiative, a platform aimed at building a strong network of Erasmus Mundus students and alumni across Germany. This national chapter seeks to empower members through peer support, professional networking, and collaboration opportunities, strengthening the bonds between current students, alumni, and aspirants.
By providing relevant and practical support, EMA Germany reinforces the core mission of the Erasmus Mundus Association: to develop a large, engaged network of EM students and alumni, and to facilitate meaningful connections and opportunities for collaboration within the greater Erasmus Mundus community.
As the first of its kind, the EMA Germany Pre-Departure Orientation 2025 set the tone for future initiatives, ensuring that every German Erasmus Mundus scholar feels supported, informed, and connected from the very beginning of their journey.
“It was inspiring to see so many motivated students ready to embrace this life-changing experience,” shared Nico Wichmann, Country Representative for Germany. “This event not only answered practical questions but also celebrated the spirit of Erasmus Mundus - diversity, learning, and connection.”
With this successful launch, EMA Germany takes a confident step forward in uniting and empowering its growing community, helping shape the next generation of globally minded scholars and leaders.
