On 6 May 2025, the Erasmus Mundus Students and Alumni Association (EMA) received confirmation that the trademark application of EMA's logo was successfully published in the trademark register of the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property (BOIP). BOIP is the official authority for trademark and design registration in the Benelux region, established by the Benelux Convention on Intellectual Property (2005). This registration means that the EMA logo is now legally protected within the Benelux region and cannot be used by others without authorization, ensuring exclusive rights to its visual identity going forward.

The design had been outlined in Article 1.3 of the latest amendments of the EMA’s Statutes, as featuring a circular design comprising three curved book pages and a quill set against a colored background—typically white pages on a blue background.

As a testament to the logo’s intricacy and symbolic richness, it has been formally described using Vienna Classification CFE codes, reflecting its diverse visual components. The design incorporates elements categorized under 03.07.19, representing parts of birds, feathers, and footprints—signifying movement, identity, and heritage. It also includes motifs from 20.01.11, which denote writing, drawing, or painting materials, as well as 20.05.25 and 20.07.02, referencing paper, documents, books, and magazines—symbolic of knowledge, communication, and storytelling. Visually, the logo features structured graphical elements such as more than two lines or bands (26.11.03), thick lines or bands (26.11.06), and wavy or zigzag lines or bands (26.11.13), reflecting both fluidity and structure in the overall design. The trademark registration was spearheaded by a legal team working on this topic led by Razy Aman Eddine and advised by Muhammad (Dwista) Rasendriya and Zara Kaushik as part of a broader effort to strengthen the protection and recognition of EMA’s visual identity. Many thanks also goes to Ayeray Medina Bustos from Argentina (Erasmus Mundus Master in Applied Ethics), who was the original designer of the logo back in 2007. More information here.
